Toyota Prius: Roadtest

The Toyota Prius has landed on Indian shores waving the eco-friendly flag. It may be the first word in hybrid cars internationally, but does it really have a place in the Indian automotive scenario? Sopan Sharma hugs trees for a day

Delivery of Prius begins by March end

I love our planet and like most of us, hate the climbing heat from our carbon emitting lifestyles. Unfortunately, I love being at the wheel much more, and an afternoon at the garage is preferred over an evening in the park. New propaganda flaming petrol-heads has seen the light in the last few years however, and while IC engines have grown progressively cleaner there is just one real way of showing that you are true-blue-green - the sort that uses only paper bags and has a compost heap in his backyard. It is called a hybrid vehicle, and the best seller of the lot has just made its debut in India.

Some may say that Toyota has lost its sporty edge of late, but whatever it has lost in terms of making erstwhile scorchers like the Supra and the Celica, it has made up for by making increasingly user-friendly, refined and reliable cars. If it had not, it wouldn't be the world's biggest car maker with such fierce consistency. Logical then, that when the world had just begun to see eco-friendly back in 1997, Toyota had already cooked up the solution, sold it and taken home the profits. It was called the Prius, and was the world's first mass-produced hybrid car, since it made use of both petrol and electricity to push itself around. And now it is coming to India with the third avatar of its green crusader - the Prius.

Design Dissection

Like most Toyota products, the design approach is on the conservative side, which is welcome for a change on a 'car of the future' like the Prius where it is just too easy to go ultra-radical and create a design inspired from a spaceship. The approach has worked well for Toyota consistently in the past - the non-threatening and civil countenance only widening the appeal of its products. The Prius is no different.

Despite its no-nonsense design, the Prius comes across as a remarkably elegant and more importantly, one of the most identifiable designs on the street. The tall bumper and the absence of a large grille thanks to lower cooling requirements make for a very tidy front. The short and sweetly creased hood stays far from being ungainly, and flows smoothly into the swooping silhouette of the roofline. At the rear, the sweet beak spoiler sets the car apart from almost any other hatchback in the market, and the large tail lamp cluster spreads very well to complete the view.

Toyota-Prius_3

Apart from being aesthetically non-controversial, the design of the Prius has a lot of technology riding behind itself. The exterior is a fantastic study in the art of aerodynamics - reduced drag principles applied here not for performance but for green gains. Directing airflow away from frontal surfaces is a big pro, and smart touches like the hidden diffuser at the rear guide the wind around the car in a most unobtrusive manner. Thanks to all the smartly contoured nooks and crannies, the car returns with a class busting drag co-efficient as low as 0.25. To do that without making the car look like a scalpel is certainly no mean feat, and the fact that it still remains easy and pleasant on the eye means high marks for the design.

Housefull tribute to filmmakers of 70s, 80s: Sajid Khan

Filmmaker Sajid Khan says that his upcoming movie
Housefull is a tribute to the iconic directors of 70s and 80s who redefined Hindi cinema with entertaining movies.

Sajid Khan said directors like Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra, Feroz Khan, Hrishikesh Mukherji and many others made some of the most entertaining films and Housefull is a "humble homage" to them.

The film starring Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta, Ritiesh Deshmukh, Arjun Rampal, Jiah Khan, Randhir Kapoor and Boman Irani is set to hit the big screen on April 30.

Speaking about his experiences while shooting for the film, Sajid said that filming in Italy was torturous for Akshay Kumar since he couldn't enjoy the gourmet food.

A scene required the cast to emerge from the water with toned bodies and hence they were all on rigorous workout
and diet schedules.

"While myself, Farah Khan and Sajid Nadiadwala would
gorge on the local delicacies the cast couldn't help but watch with envy. Akshay came to my hotel room on the pretense of rehearsing dialogues and ordered food through room service and also told me to keep mum and not tell on him to his trainer Jennifer," said Sajid.

On asking him why he was cheating on his diet Akshay
replied ,"I'm only human".

Similarly, during the film's London schedule, Sajid recalled that his elevator got stuck for almost 30 minutes.

"I used that time to make calls to co-ordinate the shoot," he said adding that when he came out of the elevator, he was still on his phone unperturbed by the incident.

Sajid said singer Shabbir Kumar makes a comeback in Bollywood after nearly a decade in his movie. He has worked for the first time with Shankar-Ehsaan Roy.

He said the Housefull album composed by Shankar
Ehsaan Loy has a feel of the music from the 1980's and Shabbir Kumar made for an ideal singer for one particular number.

Google Apps get Microsoft touch

Google has upgraded its online package of word processing and spreadsheet programs so that they work even more like the Microsoft applications with
which they're competing.

The changes introduced recently include several editing tools for word processing and quicker ways to fill cells in spreadsheets. The new features have long been staples in Microsoft’s widely used Office suite of software.

Google has been trying to lure users away from Microsoft's products for several years in an effort to siphon revenue from one of its biggest rivals. At the same time, Google hopes to diversify its own business , lessening its financial dependence on Internet advertising powered primarily by its search engine.
Winning converts has taken time because Google requires people to reach its programs over the Internet — a concept that has become known as “cloud computing.” Microsoft's competing applications typically are installed on individual computers.

Kingfisher, Air India flights disrupted

NEW DELHI: Kingfisher Airlines cancelled its flights to London for the second consecutive day on Friday while Air India rescheduled its flights to London, Toronto and New York as airspace was closed over several North European airports due to drifting ash from a volcano in Iceland.

Kingfisher flights from New Delhi to London and from London to New Delhi were cancelled. Also, a flight from Mumbai to London and London to Mumbai were cancelled.

"In view of continuous restriction over UK airspace and closure of London's Heathrow airport, Kingfisher airlines cancelled its flights from Mumbai and New Delhi to London today," Kingfisher spokesperson Prakash Mir Puri said here.

Air India has rescheduled its long haul flights to Toronto, New York and London till 2pm today.

"Due to airspace restrictions, Air India's flight from Delhi to New York, Mumbai to New York, Mumbai-London, Delhi-London-Toronto, Delhi-Frankfurt, Mumbai-Frankfurt- Chicago and Ahmedabad-Frankfurt-Newark will leave after 2 PM today," an AI spokesperson said.

On Thursday, Kingfisher cancelled all its flights to London from Mumbai and Delhi while Jet cancelled two flights from the two Indian metropolises and one from London to Delhi.

Passengers have been advised to call the airline office to know their flight schedule before proceeding for airports, officials said.

The British Air Traffic Control has prohibited aircraft entering certain parts of airspace over the UK as flying ash compromised visibility and debris can be sucked into the engines of aircraft.

The drifting ash clouds also paralysed all the airports in Norway, Finland and Sweden as the volcano under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier erupted on Wednesday again for a second time in less than a month.

Obama asks world to lock down nuclear material

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama warned that terror groups like al-Qaida were trying to acquire nuclear material for weapons posing one of the "greatest threats" to global security and pitched for concrete collective steps to deal with this challenge.

Addressing the Nuclear Security Summit here, Obama said the world would need "a new manner of thinking and action" to deal with the real problem facing the world peace and stability.

"Terrorist networks such as al-Qaida have tried to acquire the material for a nuclear weapon. And if they ever succeeded, they would surely use it.

"Were they to do so, it would be a catastrophe for the world, causing extraordinary loss of life and striking a major blow to global peace and stability," he told a gathering of leaders from 47 countries, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, assembled to discuss ways to prevent terrorists gaining access to nuclear material and know-how.

He said it was increasingly clear that the danger of nuclear terrorism is "one of the greatest threats to global security, to our collective security."

Now, Tharoor aide slams Modi on Twitter

Shashi Tharoor's Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Jacob Jospeh has now joined the tweet war, going straight for Lalit Modi's jugular.

Jacob has posted a link to a recent newspaper article that alleged that Lalit Modi was convicted of possessing drugs, kidnapping and assault in the US during his days as a university student.

The conviction, the article says, came after Modi confessed to committing the offences before a US court.

The article quotes Modi's lawyers as saying that he did not serve the two-year jail sentence as he was let off on probation, and the county court did not give a final decision on his sentencing for drugs possession.

According to the newspaper report: "In 1985, General Court of Justice, Durham County, had charged Modi with kidnapping, assault and possession of 400 grams of cocaine, court documents show. He then entered a 'plea bargain', which is permitted under the US law and allows a reduced punishment without a trial if the accused confesses to his or her crimes."

The article points out that Modi's position as a cricket official has been challenged in the Supreme Court by a man, Kishore Rungta, who lost when Modi was elected president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association. The petitioner has pleaded that rules do not permit anyone convicted of a criminal offence to hold the post of an office-bearer.

Modi's appointment as Vice President of the BCCI was also challenged in 2007 in the Bombay High Court on the same grounds - that he had been convicted of drug trafficking in the US in 1980. Though the High Court had dismissed the petition, it had come down hard on Modi and the BCCI saying it was not proper for the "BCCI to become a tool of musclemen, merchants and power brokers."

The board, the court had said, should not become a centre of power politics and internal politics was destroying the gentleman's game.

The court even asked the BCCI if it could find no one else to be the BCCI Vice President?

Car Models in India

In earlier days there were a few car models available in India. Ambassador and Fiat were the only two models that were manufactured in India and rest of the models had to imported. In 1980s Government of India launched Maruti in collaboration with Suzuki of Japan. Maruti revolutionized Indian car industry in a big way. But the main push for Indian automobile industrycame after 1991 in the post liberalization era. Industrial guidelines and investment climate was made more investor friendly. This prompted all the big automobile players such as Hyundai, Mitsubishi, General Motors, Honda, Mercedes et al. to invest in India and today most of the car models that are available elsewhere are also available in India.

Smita Thackeray set to join Congress

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray's daughter-in-law Smita Thackeray may soon join Congress
, a Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson said on Tuesday.

"Smita Thackeray is on way to joining the Congress," MPCC Spokesperson and former minister Hussain Dalwai told PTI.

Asked when would Smita, a film producer and social worker, join Congress, Dalwai said, "I cannot tell exactly when she would join but she is on way to joining the party".

Forty eight-year-old Smita is reportedly peeved at being "marginalised" in the Thackeray household and feels that the Sena is being "unfair" to Maharashtrians with its parochial politics.

The MPCC spokesperson said, "The fact that Smita is on way to Congress shows that after Bal Thackeray there is no one in Sena whose leadership people trust."

A member of Thackeray joining Congress is a significant development, he said.

"Anyone who is ready to abide by the ideology of the party and has faith in leadership of Sonia Gandhi is welcome in the party," Dalwai added.

Fake cops con man outside police station

In a bizarre happening, two men conned the driver of a city businessman by posing as cops. Surprisingly, the incident took place in front of R T Nagar traffic police station while the driver Rajesh was on his way home after dropping his boss at the airport.According to Rajesh, a man dressed in khaki forced him to stop the car and alleged that he was driving rashly and had overtaken his senior's car. Soon, another man, who was dressed in plain clothes but introduced himself as a traffic cop, joined him and got into Rajesh's car. They, then, asked Rajesh to drive, as the senior officer wanted to meet him. When Rajesh opposed, they threatened to book him under various sections. Frightened of the consequences that he would have to face, Rajesh obeyed whatever they said. The duo instructed Rajesh to drive towards Nelamangala. Once there, they took him to Mallige Resort, locked him in one of the rooms, took the keys of his car and left saying that the officer will be there at any moment and will meet him. But when the officer didn't turn up, Rajesh realised that he had been conned and called the resort staff for help.He then called up his boss immediately and narrated the incident to him. Acting upon his boss's directions, Rajesh rushed to Sanjay Nagar police station and registered a complaint. The police have registered a case of robbery against the duo.According to the officer who is investigating the case, the accused may be a part of a gang that's operating in the city by posing as cops. "After we initiated a drive against these gangs, such inciden

Another major fire in Bangalore, no casualties

Bangalore held its breath on Monday afternoon as smoke began filling the sky near the Bangalore Club at about 1.30 pm.A fire had begun at NYK's Pub on Residency Road in the heart of the city. The pub is located on the fourth floor of a commercial building called Gold Towers.Within seconds, people working in offices nearby were tweeting their photos and comments. One tweeter posted, "I can hear the fire engine arriving now."The city is still recovering from the shock of another huge fire at Carlton Towers less than a month ago in which nine people were killed. Some of them had jumped in panic from the top floors of the commercial building and did not survive the fall. (Read: 9 dead, 59 injured in Carlton Towers blaze)On Monday's fire at NYK's pub, there were no casualties reported. Like most other weekdays, the pub was virtually empty.A total of 14 fire engines were used to battle the humongous flames. Firefighters confirm that the owners of the building were conducting a hawan on an open-air terrace. They will not comment on whether the hawan may have caused the fire. What do they explain is that the hawan was held right next to the pub's wooden dance floor, most of which is now charred.

10 Mobile phones with high radiation

Do cell phones cause brain cancer, dementia or have other side effects? Though there have been numerous studies on this, the verdict remains unclear. For, some studies reveal long-term side effects of cell phone usage others term them as mere hype. However, it is largely certain that cell phones do emit radiation. In fact, some analysts are now of the view that all cell phones should compulsorily display their radiation levels. US-based environmental group EWG recently published a list of phones with high levels of RF radiation. The list includes some of the most popular smartphone models from companies like Apple, LG, HTC, Motorola, Blackberry and Samsung. The study is based on SAR or Specific Absorption Rate. SAR according to the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association is “a way of measuring the quantity of radio frequency (RF) energy that is absorbed by the body. Here's over to the EWG list.

BMW X1 is India-bound!

It's sort of a reverse evolution as SUVs are now getting smaller. Yes, the BMW X1 is on its way to India soon.
Internationally the X1 comes with a huge range to choose from - in both two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions powered by a 2-litre inline 4 petrol, a 3-litre inline 6 petrol in two different states of tune and a 2-litre inline 4 diesel in three different states of tune! It's also got the usual BMW techno-wizardry including Dynamic Traction Control, EfficientDynamics and ConnectedDrive. Now, which of these engine options will be making it to Indian shores is something we'll just have to wait and watch for.

Chevrolet Cruze: First Drive

Just one look at the Cruze and you will be taken in by its good looks, taunt stance and size. The large rakish headlights, wide grill and sculpted bumper give the car a menacingly handsome fascia. GM is definitely taking styling very seriously and considering the fact that the Cruze is set to have a global presence, this fact is all the more important for the first step towards acceptance is that customers worldwide should admire the way the car looks.

With such focus on style, GM didn't just stop at the front. When viewed from the side, the sporty overtone carries over for the car has a nicely curved roofline that merges well with the rather steeply raked rear windscreen. It's a rather European look and feel that this car possesses, except from the rear. The rear of the Cruze screams 'Honda Civic'. Literally, the rear lights just look like inverted Civic lights a fact that was confirmed by onlookers who asked me if I happen to be driving the new Civic. Of course they were completely oblivious to the bow-tie on the rear, but it does prove my point.
Nevertheless, the Cruze oozes with style and complimenting the entire package are the nice large 16 inch alloys wrapped in tubeless 205/60 JK Vectra rubber. To sum the exterior styling, I would say the Cruze is a combination of American Muscle Car and European Sedan with a dash of Japanese essence thrown in! What you get is a marriage of parts that work to give you a stunning car that would even look good in racing stripes.

Getting into the Cruze is also an experience for you don't need the keys to open the door! That's right, the Cruze comes with sensors on the door, so just as long as you have the keys in your pocket the door will pop right open when you pull on the handle. While on the subject of doors, it is rather simple to lock as well, for all you have to do is give the handle a gentle pull and the doors will lock. Anyways, back to the interiors of the car.

Once inside you will notice the sporty-muscle tone carried over here as well. It's a bit too much plastic at parts and the fit and finish could have been better but the overall look is rather striking for you almost feel as though you are in a cockpit. The large steering wheel with cruise control and stereo controls has a nice feel to it, the dials boast of a three-pod look that might have come straight out of a classic Chevy car-chrome and all!The center console however had me thinking 'Transformers'. Starting from the LED display to the controls of the in dash stereo and CD player down to the controls for the A/C and climate control and flanked by the center two A/C vents on the dash, the entire look was rather like the Transformers logo- a good thing considering the fact that GM is the official provider of cars for the Transformers movie franchise!
GM could have really done wonders with the interiors for they are well designed, its just that they are poorly put together at places. Apart from the plastic cubby holes in the doors the one little box on top of the dashboard spoils the party for it just doesn't sit right and has gaping gaps when shut. Another element that caught my eye as tacky was the sunglass holder. Placed uniquely towards the right side of the driver's head, the quality of the holder was really sub standard.
In terms of space, the Cruze is rather decent and offers ample room for the front passengers. Rear passengers also get enough leg room however head room is at a premium thanks to the steeply raked rear glass and downward flowing roofline.
A neat yet rather awesome surprise is thrown at you when you want to get the car moving. There is no key hole for the ignition! Instead you get a rather neat start/stop button towards the left of the steering column on the dash. A gentle push of the button, provided you have the clutch pressed and the 2.0 VCDi Diesel engine roars to life. Alright, you really can't hear it roar thanks to all the insulation, but the car does come to life. The instrument cluster takes on a neat blue glow which fits in well with the sporty tone and as you notch it into first gear to drive away you finally realize why this car is called the Cruze!
