Finally a week before the shoot Asin has confirmed for the first time that she is going to play heroine in Vijay’s new Tamil film to be directed by Siddique.

Remember that the actress had given a quote or statement that she is officially a part of the Vijay film. This family entertainer is a remake of the Malayalam film Bodyguard which had Dileep and Nayanthara, and the shoot of the film will start in Chennai from April 1.

Speaking first to sify.com from Mumbai Asin said: “I’m doing a Tamil film after nearly three years, with Vijay again. The film is to be directed by Siddique and is being produced by Sivaraju Venkatraju of Geetha Chitra International.”

Asin’s last release in Tamil was Dasavatharam with Kamal Hassan in 2008. Says Asin : “ It is great to be back. I’m looking forward to work with Vijay again, who is a great co-star and a good friend. This is our third movie together and it should be loads of fun.”

Paiyaa gets ready as the big summer release!

Thiruppathi Brothers and Cloud Nine have confirmed the release date of their eagerly awaited Paiyaa on April 2, as the first of the summer biggies.

Dhayanidhi Alagiri’s Cloud Nine Movies will be distributing Paiyaa in Tamil Nadu. They have earlier released Suriya starrer Varanam Aayiram followed by their successful venture Tamil Padam. It is highly expected that this movie would be a hat trick for Cloud Nine Movies and also for Karthi.

Paiyaa is set in the backdrop of highways - the plot progresses from Bangalore to Mumbai. The film marks the return of Director Lingusamy after hits like Anandam, Run, Sandakozhi and Bheema with young actor Karthi and the new sensation Tamannaah in the lead.

Jayavel Murugan of Narmadha Media is distributing the film in North America and is all excited as already, there have been numerous enquiries in trade and expected to open in 18 cities across US and Canada with more than 20 prints, biggest for Karthi.

Pre release buzz is that Paiyaa is a well crafted film, with excellent songs and amazing stunts. It will surely be another feather in the cap of Director Lingusamy, Karthi and Tamannaah.

Deepika-Imran bonding on the sets of Break Ke Baad

Deepika Padukone, who's in Delhi to shoot for Danish Aslam's Break Ke Baad, was hit by a strong current of deja vu.

Just a year ago she was in Delhi shooting for Imtiaz Ali's Love Aaj Kal. Even there her co-star Saif Ali Khan had his lady-love Kareena Kapoor along, so that Deepika had voluntarily kept to herself.

"Not this time!" reports a source from Delhi. "Imran and Avantika have made Deepika feel most welcome and a part of their circle. In fact, Deepika is completely at home hanging around with Imran and Avantika."

A private person by nature and known to stay aloof, Deepika has for the first time become so gregarious during shooting.

"During the shooting of Love Aaj Kal, Deepika barely exchanged anything beyond a hello with her co-star Saif in London and Delhi. Even with Neil Nitin Mukesh whom she just shot with, Deepika was polite. But with Imran, Deepika is at her warmest, thanks to Avantika who has gone out of her way to make Deepika comfortable," revealed a source.

"You're taller than me," was Deepika's first reaction when they started shooting together. Imran Khan and his fiance Avantika landed in Delhi a day before Deepika.

"Deepika and Imran shot in and around Delhi's streets from Wednesday. Everywhere they were greeted by mobs. Avantika has been a big support for Deepika. Though Imran and Deepika are friends they are fiercely competitive on screen," said producer Kunal Kohli.

The idea, in case anyone misses the point, is that Deepika hopes to form a long-lasting screen pair with Imran.

"Well I do have two distinct looks in the first and second half of Break De Baad. Beyond that it's too early to discuss anything," said Deepika

Gautham Vasudev Menon is back with a film straight from the heart. The director, who believes in meaningful cinema, is trying to push the cinematic envelope with Vaaranam Aayiram. The film is clearly meant for niche audiences, and not for mass viewing. It is a tribute to the director's dad, who passed away last year. The treatment and narration are purely autobiographical with most of it taken from real life incidents laced with cinematic liberties. In a nutshell, the film is personal and deals with the deep bonding between a loving and devoted father and his son who is trying to discover himself. Menon's life story may be woefully long and meandering ( 2 hours 55 minutes) with a great first half, but post Interval, it lags. Still it works and grabs us where it matters and leaves a lump in your throat. The movie opens with an army officer Surya receiving the news of his dad’s death while on a mission. Flashback- Right from his birth, for Surya (Surya) his dad Krishnan (Surya), a middle-class central government employee is more of a friend and a role model than a disciplinarian father. He dotes on his dad more than his mom Malini (Simran) and sister Shriya, and they live a happy life. Surya is influenced by his dad's stories of how he romanced his mother and won her. As Malini nostalgically tells him- “He just swept me off my feet"! Surya goes to an Engineering college in Tiruchi, after his father borrows money to pay his capitation fees, but ends up watching movies than attending classes. After his last semester exams, on the way back to Chennai he meets the beautiful Meghana (Sameera Reddy) on train and it is love at first sight. Being a guy who has never looked at a girl, he pulls out his guitar and sings En iniyia pon nilaave! Meghana and Surya are like chalk and cheese; she has graduated from the prestigious REC, Tiruchi a studious type and a topper who is going to do her MS at Berkley University in California! But somehow Surya who says he has been hit by a "thunderbolt" tells her-" I will come into your life and sweep you off your feet". How his father sticks with him through thick and thin and helps him to attain his goal against all odds, forms rest of this bio pic. Gautham simply wrings you dry with his overplay of emotions in the father-son bonding. The climax is heart wrenching and heartwarming as Surya's breakdown and tears roll down his cheek which looks real. The best part of the film is the first half, especially the wispy romance between Surya and Sameera Reddy, with the scene where Surya falls for her in the train is hilarious and romantic. And when Sameera says finally – "I'm in love", with Surya playing around with a toy helicopter at Fort Point, which offers the best view of the Golden Bridge in San Francisco, the romance tugs at your heart. Only Gautham, a romantic can make such scenes work. Technically the film is state of art. Rajeevan's art work captures the ethos and milieu of the 60's feel in the beginning effectively. For a change Antony does not do any gimmicks, and you should understand that its not an easy job to edit an autobiographical. Ratnavel's camera is eye-catching as it pans California, Dehradun, Delhi, Rameswaram and other locations and gives the film richness. Surya's make-up, his six pack look and old man get-up is very good. The music of Harris Jayaraj is first rate and tangy, with meaningful lyrics of Thamarai. This is Harris- Gautham's last film together and the combo is simply terrific. Four of the songs before interval are shot beautifully like a music video, with Adiye Kolluthe… and Nenjukkul Peidhidum.. being the pick of lot, while two songs post interval mars the tempo. However the music of the film and its picturisation will remain the USP of the film. The power-packed performer award belongs to Surya, who is outstanding in a dual role as father and son. Shorn off any artifice, his anguish, pains and joy look real. The female star cast is simply too good, whether it is Simran playing Surya's mother, Sameera Reddy pure eye candy and brings an uninhibited joie to her role as Meghana. Divya is outstanding, investing her character with sensitivity a far cry from her Kuthu days. On the downside, the film is excruciatingly slow, and in the second half plods as the director has no story to say. All of a sudden why did he make his hero larger than life? The Delhi kidnapping and the hero solving it has been done to bring out his heroism, which sticks out like a sore thumb. Is there not a cut-off age to join the army? Surya's character is far too simplistic. The thing about a father backing his son to go to America and win over his lady love just doesn't wash. An ordinary middle class, Tamil family speaking so fluently in English does not gel with viewers. The film demands great patience to sit through and is an overdose of emotions. If the film holds on, it is because of its music and superb performance of Surya. On the whole, the film is optimistic, fresh and emotionally honest. But how mature are our audiences, is the million dollar question?

Sura: Vijay's 50th movie is coming soon

A Sun Pictures release and Ilayathalapathy Vijay's 50th film, Sura, is likely to be a big summer release in April. The film, directed by SP Rajakumar, has Tamannaah as the leading lady.

It has music by Mani Sharma and Ekambaram as cameraman. The shoot of the film, produced by Sangli Murugan, is almost complete with just one song remaining.

The film promises to be a complete family entertainer with all mass elements associated with a typical Vijay film.

Priyanka finds Saat Khoon Maaf role most difficult

National Award winning actress Priyanka Chopra says her role in Saat Khoon Maaf is the toughest project she has ever taken up.

"I have been so lost ... this film ... Saat Khoon Maaf is taking the mickey out of me ... the most difficult role of my life," Priyanka, who won the best actress National award for her powerful performance in Fashion, wrote on her Twitter page.

Saat Khoon Maaf is being directed by Vishal Bharadwaj. In the film, Priyanka has seven husbands - while Naseeruddin Shah plays her oldest spouse, Neil Nitin Mukesh has just been signed to play the youngest.

The actress was previously seen in Bharadwaj's production venture Kaminey.

It was another case of East meets West as SRK and Akon were spotted at a party thrown by the former at Mumbai's JW Marriot hotel.

The singer was reportedly in town to record a song for Shah Rukh's upcoming superhero flick, Ra 1. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the movie has the Bollywood superstar playing a software engineer in Miami who's inadvertently drawn into combat with a self-created virtual monster, Ra 1.

If reports are to be believed the film also has Akon as part of the cast.

VTV is an intense love story: Gautham Menon

Gautham Vasudev Menon loves to play to the gallery. Not necessarily in the kind of films that he makes but the kind of quotes he belts out to the media. He has made gems like Minnale, Kaakha Kaakha and the recent Varanam Aayiram. Sridevi Sreedhar delves into the mind of a sensitive filmmaker as his romantic musical Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya gets ready for release. Excerpts from a free wheeling conversation, as he celebrates his birthday today.

Many Many Happy returns of the day. What’s your plan for the day?
Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya is all set for release on Friday (Feb 26) worldwide. As usual, I am facing pre-release jitters and last evening I came home after despatching the overseas prints. The first copy of the Telugu version, which is also having a simultaneous release, was given three days back to the producers. I plan to spend my birthday with my family and in the evening I am holding a special show for my close friends, cast and crew of the film. I am too tensed to have a party (smiles). And the best birthday gift that I am getting, is to hear that the film has taken an awesome opening at the advance booking counters all over Tamilnadu.

What is the genre of the film?
It is a realistic take on love and works on the theory that what happens on screen need not happen in real life. It is an out and out love story, a genre which I am doing after Minnale. All my last few releases were action films with romance in the backdrop and my friends asked me to make a straight romantic musical. So I decided to make a simple love story which slowly became an intense love story. I realised it only when people in the censor board gave the film an UA certificate. They thought that the subject is so intense that they were forced to give it an UA certification.

Today Gautham Menon is a brand and people come to the theatres to watch your films. Please comment.
I am happy to hear that. But all I have to say is that please come to the theatres without any expectations and enjoy some good songs. It is a love story of two people Karthik and Jessy over a period of almost three years. The film is conversation driven and everybody will identify with my lead pair. I have not made them act and most of the time I asked Simbu and Trisha to be natural and it was more like capturing them on candid camera.

The music of AR Rahman has not appealed to all section of people. They say, it’s too classy and western?
I beg to differ on this as going by sales according to Sony Music, the audio is a super hit. And even when I had discussions with Rahman in the beginning, I told him that I didn’t want the usual kind of songs. It’s not like a Tamil commercial album as the songs do not have a pallavi or charanam. And trust me; everybody is going to love the songs more after watching the film.

Like all your films, is Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya aimed at Multiplex A class audiences?
I have never written a film aiming at A, B or C class audiences. It is critics and trade who differentiate the audiences. I think that a man in Theni, Chennai or New York can relate to a good movie. All my films have a universal subject which will appeal to everybody.

You have been often in the news for the kind of quotes you give out to the media, be it on Bheema, or films made by other directors. Please comment?
I think, I’ve been misquoted a few times. A far as Bheema goes, yes I had said that it was not a good film. But recently a Tamil magazine misquoted me when they wrote about my comments on director Sasikumar. I have great regards for Sasi and like the films that he has made and in fact I had asked him to direct one of the films that I will be producing shortly. I had called Sasi and apologised for what had happened. Regarding Ameer, I still stand with my comment that he should have never acted in Yogi and should stick to direction which he is very good at. I think media always like fall guys like me and hence they target me. I never vehemently criticize other directors and recently I liked Selva’s Aayirathil Oruvan, which I thought was a brilliant effort.

Recently you had a tiff with Manjula the producer of the Telugu version of Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya?
Yes, she agreed to pay me my salary plus fifty percent of the profits of the film. I finished the film in 55 days but she could not sell the film and later demanded my salary back and filed a complaint against me in the producer’s council. I gave her back the 1. 6 Crores and now she is releasing the film herself. I regret doing a film with people who have no passion or knowledge of good cinema. But it was an eye-opener and will not do the film that we were supposed to do with Mahesh Babu in the lead.

How was it working with Silambarasan and Trisha?
There is a fine actor inside Simbu and he has done a brilliant job in my film. He used to get his emotions correct in a single take and his dancing is superb. Given a chance, I would love to work with him again. Trisha is a sweetheart and a wonderful actor to work with. They have done a brilliant job and the chemistry is intact. Most of the time they were natural and did not know that I was capturing them; it was like a candid camera.

But you had said that they fell in love during the making or was it a publicity stunt by the director himself?
(Laughs) I am a director, not a pimp!

IPL fever hits theatre ticket sales in a big way today!!!

The IPL cricket fever, which has gripped the nation and the cricketing world in an unprecedented manner, appears to be having quite an impact in the ticket sales in the theatres in Chennai where Tamil and Hindi movies are playing.
Theatre owners say that the IPL, which started on 12th of this month and is being held in various Indian cities, has been affecting the run of the films screened in the matinee, evening and night shows, as the matches are held from 04:00 p.m. in the evening to 11:00 p.m. in the night. Taking to cricket viewing in a big way, the students and the public tend to be ignoring (for the time being, though) Tamil and Hindi films. This has resulted in theaters reporting a steep decline in ticket sales on all the above-said three shows. Theatre owners, on condition of anonymity, have said that in some theatres, shows had to be cancelled as none of them turned out to watch the films.
