TN will never give up its rights: CM

Mar 20, 2010: Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Friday said that Tamil Nadu would never give up its rights over the Mullaperiyar dam.

Speaking to reporters after presiding over the DMK MLAs' meeting held at Anbagam in Chennai, he said, “Farmers are not facing any crisis immediately. That does not mean that we remain unperturbed. Our
concern is that we should not create any adverse situation for the farmers by giving up our rights over the dam.”

The DMK president said he had decided to campaign for the Pennagaram byelection and added: “I have visited Pennagaram many times to propagate the ideas of the DMK. Now I don't want to disappoint the
people of the constituency.”

To a question on the AIADMK MLAs coming to the Assembly in black shirts, he said they could have foreseen that their leader Jayalalithaa's application in the Supreme Court seeking an interim stay on the proceedings in the special court in Bangalore would be dismissed.

He also took a dig at the PMK's allegation that the budget was disappointing. “The PMK has a lot of disappointments and I could not help it,” said the Chief Minister.

Police station gets modern building

Chennai police Commissioner T Rajendran today inaugurated a new, modernised premises for the Kotturpuram police station constructed at a cost of Rs 27 lakh on Gandhi Mandapam Road.

The building to house the Kotturpuram police station was constructed by the Tamilnadu Police Housing Corporation early last year. Earlier, the police station was functioning from a building owned by the Tamilnadu Housing Board in the midst of a residential housing complex on Gandhi Mandapam Road. The new facility has a built-up area of 8,000 sq ft with ultra-modern facilities including a focus lamp at the two lock-up cells. Inaugurating the new building, Rajendran said the government had constructed a permanent building for it as part of the drive towards modernisation of the police force. He said the Kotturpuram police station was functioning from 1980. Since important institutions like Anna University, IIT, Central Leather Research Institute, Cancer hospital and Anna Memorial library fall under the (police) station limit, police personnel would also focus their attention on providing adequate security cover. Queried about film director Aravind’s case, he said with complaints pouring in against the person in question, the case is expected to be transferred to the CCB soon. Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Shakeel Akthar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ravi, Joint Commissioner Shakthivel and Deputy Commissioner Senthamaraikannan also participated.

Govt bus overturns, falls on passengers

three women and a teenage boy were crushed to death and 14 others injured when a lorry rammed into a stationary bus that overturned and fell on them under the impact. The accident took place at Koovathur on the East Coast Road in the wee hours of today, police said.

The Nagapattinam-bound Tamilnadu State Express Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus from Chennai was parked on the roadside after it ran out of fuel near Kalpakkam. Thirty-three passengers were travelling in it. As the driver boarded a passing bus to fetch diesel, the passengers in the stationary bus alighted from it and were sitting on the roadside when the Puducherry-bound lorry from Chennai rammed into their bus. The impact was such that the bus overturned and fell on the people sitting on the roadside. The deceased were identified as Banu (21), hailing from Nagapattiam, Rama (45) and her son Ranjith Kumar (17), both from Wallajahpet in Vellore district, and Lalitha (35) from Mangadu near Chennai. In all, 14 people, including those sitting on the road and those in the bus, sustained injuries. They were admitted to a private hospital at Kelambakkam on the OMR and at Government Chengalpet Hospital.

TN Govt inks pact with SCE for Cooum river cleaning

Chennai, Mar 18: With a view to use Singapore's expertise in cleaning up the highly polluted Cooum river in the city, Tamil Nadu government today inked a pact with the Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE).

The Memorandum of Understanding with SCE, an agency formed by the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, will allow the latter to share inputs in project development, sharing expertise with local engineers and advise the state government on various aspects of Cooum revamping.

The SCE team is on a three-day visit to the state and scheduled to make field visits tomorrow, a government release here said.

Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin had visited Singapore last year to study the cleaning up process of Singapore river and submitted a report to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

Later, the Chennai River Authority was formed with Stalin as the head to take up the cleaning up of the 65 km long river originating from the nearby Tiruvallore district.

Letting in of industrial polluntants and other wastes into the river had turned the river into one of the most polluted water bodies in the state, with successive governments initiating various projects for its clean up. - Agencies

State-wide public hearing on Power Tariff hike

Chennai, Mar 18: Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC), which has recieved a proposal from the TNEB on power tariff hike, will hold state-wide public hearing in four major cities of the state starting March 30 in this regard.

As part of the consultative process, public meetings will be held at Chennai (Mar 30), Madurai (Apr 8), Coimbatore (Apr 13) and Tiruchirappally (Apr 15), TNERC said in an official release here.

Recently, citing "huge losses" and non-revision of tariff for the last seven years, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) had made the proposal for hike with TNERC for revision of tariff but said that a majority of consumers would be spared.

Those who could come under the revised power tariff regime would include domestic consumers consuming more than 200 units a month, educational institutions, cinema studios and theatres. - Agencies

CM's thanksgiving gesture to workers for building the new Secretariat and Assembly complex

Honouring those who were behind the successful completion of the new Secretariat and Assembly complex, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today hosted a grand luncheon for engineers, contractors and workers.

The new Assembly complex with state-of-the-art facilities was inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the presence of AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and Karunanidhi at Omandurar Government Estate here on Saturday. Constructed at an estimate of Rs 500 crore, the works began in 2008 and completed as planned in a couple of years. The huge complex is a labour of love of DMK president Karunanidhi who has been visiting the the landmark edifice in Chennai on almost daily basis to review its progress. Karunanidhi had first made the announcement for the project in 2007 during the golden jubilee celebration of his political career. At the thanksgiving function today, the building engineers, contractors and workers have been served with biriyanis and host of delicious food. The Chennai Sangamam team performed a variety entertainment shows. Among those who were present on the occasion include Assembly Speaker T Avudaiappan, Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin, State Ministers Arcot Veerasamy, Duraimurugan and senior officials of various departments.

New policy for automobile sector will be implemented soon....says" Thiru Stalin "

The Tamilnadu government will soon unveil a new policy for automobiles and auto components to attract more investments into the State, Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin announced today. Speaking at the inauguration the Nissan India car plant here, he said the new policy would be ready soon.

He said as per the Automotive Mission Plan 2006-2016 India was set to emerge as the destination of choice in the world for design and manufacture of automobiles and auto components with the output reaching a level of 145 billion US Dollars providing additional employment to 25 million people by 2016. The DMK government was committed to capitalising this opportunity and attract a major share of investment flows. ‘To achieve this objective, our government is currently formulating a new policy for Automobiles and Components and it will be ready soon.’ He said Chennai has emerged as India’s largest automobile and auto components manufacturer and exporter in India. ‘From bicycles to battle tanks, everything that moves is being manufactured in Chennai. With six car projects — Ford, Hyundai, BMW, Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi-HM — Chennai is now emerging as one of the top ten Global Automobile manufacturing centre’, he added. Stalin said Chennai would have an installed capacity to produce 12.80 lakh cars and 3.50 lakh commercial vehicles each year. ‘This translates to an output of three cars every minute and one Commercial vehicle every 75 seconds’, he said, adding during 2008-09. Chennai produced 5.60 lakh passenger cars, accounting for 30.6 per cent of India’s production. With the largest auto components industry base, Tamilnadu accounted for around 32 per cent of India’s production capacity, Stalin said. ‘Abundant availability of skilled manpower in automobile engineering, excellent port logistics, reliable infrastructure, favourable investment climate and pro-active government support are the primary reasons for making Tamilnadu the home of automobile manufacturing’, he added. Stalin said notwithstanding the current global slowdown, Tamilnadu has been attracting a large number of domestic and foreign investors, thanks to government’s transparent policy and quick response to investment proposals. Stating that the government was honouring the commitments made to investors, he said the state was one of the major recipients of industrial investments. ‘Recently, the State government passed a legislation to create an, empowered Single Window Mechanism, to further speed up approvals’, he said, adding this would help transform the Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s vision of making Tamilnadu as the most favoured investment destination in the country. Lauding the Renault-Nissan management for establishing the car project in Tamilnadu, Stalin said with the commissioning of the car project, Chennai’s leadership position in automobile sector has been further strengthened.
